About

Charles Sawchenko

Charles aka ‘Chuck’ Sawchenko, was born December 30, 1937 in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Growing up, Chuck discovered his love of art in all forms, playing Clarinet and Saxophone in bands while excelling at drawing. Chuck served four years in the U.S. Navy where he traveled extensively throughout Europe and North Africa as well as the U.S. and Canada. Chuck studied art at West Virginia University and The University of Maryland where he earned his Bachelors of Fine Art. Chuck became an art teacher in the Montgomery County Public Schools while earning a Masters Degree of Fine Art at The George Washington University (1975). All throughout his teaching career Chuck was active in the Washington DC art scene participating in group and juried exhibitions, and galley shows. Chuck was a member of the Touchstone Gallery in Washington DC from 1978 - 1998. He was honored to have one of his paintings selected by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum for inclusion in a year long exhibition entitled “Earth Views” from May 1986 - 1987. Chuck retired from teaching in 1993 but continued to create art through his retirement.

The Band Series

My father Chuck created the Band Series drawings in 2003-2004 based on his deep love of music. He wanted to translate his love into a keepsake for himself and displayed the artwork in his home in Montgomery County, M.D. with no intention of broader distribution.  Despite Chuck’s intention, visitors really liked the Band Series artwork, so in 2019 we (Chuck’s kids) decided to debut the Band Series at the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival. Consisting of twelve drawings in colored pencil on paper, each picture depicts different well known musicians and bands.
